About the South Texas Insurance Education Initiative (STIEI)

Our Beginning

The South Texas Insurance Education Initiative (STIEI) was born from one person’s experience and one powerful idea—knowledge changes everything.

Founder Johnny Gonzalez, a retired U.S. Army veteran (2024) and former bilingual customer service representative at Progressive Insurance, saw firsthand how a lack of clear information in the Hispanic community left many families in South Texas financially vulnerable.

Every day, he spoke with customers who were hardworking, responsible, and family-oriented—but confused about their coverage and unaware of how small decisions could protect or hurt their financial security.

That frustration planted the seed for STIEI. Today, Johnny’s mission is to ignite a movement of education—bringing together businesses, agencies, and community leaders to make insurance knowledge accessible to everyone in the Rio Grande Valley and beyond.

Mission

To ignite awareness, collaboration, and education around insurance and financial protection—empowering South Texas families through free, bilingual workshops that simplify the complex world of insurance and prepare our communities for life’s unexpected moments.

Vision

To build a lasting, bilingual insurance education movement in the Rio Grande Valley—serving Hidalgo, Cameron, Starr, and Willacy—by expanding monthly, no‑cost workshops with local employers, schools, and nonprofits. Over the next 12 months, we will deepen community partnerships, document impact, and formalize governance so that we can apply for 501(c)(3) nonprofit status and establish permanent community education hubs where families can access free resources year‑round.

Our long-term vision is a Valley where insurance literacy is as common as driver’s licenses—where every individual, regardless of language, income, or background, understands how to protect what matters most.

What We’re Doing Now

STIEI is in its ignition phase—building awareness, trust, and partnerships.
We’re inviting businesses, agencies, schools, and civic organizations to join us in providing bilingual insurance education to employees, students, and families.Through our growing network of licensed professionals, we offer:
  • Free on-site and virtual workshops (English & Spanish)
  • Topics including auto, home, life, disability, health, long-term care, child life, and retirement basics
  • Simple handouts and checklists designed for real understanding
  • Optional 1:1 sessions, only by participant request

Our Values

  • Service: Rooted in Johnny’s Army background—service above self.
  • Integrity: No sales pitches. Only facts, clarity, and empowerment.
  • Community: Local voices teaching local realities.
  • Access: Free, bilingual, and open to everyone.
  • Collaboration: Businesses and agencies working together to protect families.
  • Empowerment: Knowledge first; decisions second.

Looking Ahead

STIEI’s long-term plan is to open dedicated community centers across the Rio Grande Valley—accessible spaces where people can attend workshops, ask questions, and connect with licensed professionals committed to education, not sales.

Until then, we’re focused on partnerships—working with businesses, agencies, and schools who share our belief that education is the first step toward empowerment.
